EXPLORE CRETE
Athens is the capital and largest city of Greece which dominates the Attica region with its recorded history spanning over 3,400 years and its earliest human presence starting somewhere between the 11th and 7th millennium BC.
Classical Athens was a powerful city-state that emerged in conjunction with the seagoing development of the port of Piraeus, which had been a distinct city prior to its 5th century BC incorporation with Athens. A center for the arts, learning and philosophy, home of Plato’s Academy and Aristotle’s Lyceum, it is widely referred to as the cradle of western civilization and the birthplace of democracy, largely because of its cultural and political impact on the European continent and the Romans. In modern times, Athens is a large cosmopolitan metropolis and central to economic, financial, industrial, maritime, political and cultural life in Greece.
Explore the area of Heraklion and visit one of the beautiful beaches for a relaxing day in the sun or take a walk around the cobbled streets and sit at one of the many coffee shops. The coffee in Heraklion is phenomenal and the tables spilling onto the pretty streets are a perfect for a spot of people-watching, taking in the hustle and bustle of the city.
We recommend a visit to the Pateles open market which is a melting pot of Heraklion society and sells everything from spices to books to leather. It’s loud and lively chaos is a must-have experience when visiting the capital of Crete. The capital of King Minos and the center of the magnificent Minoan civilization is located 5kms away from Heraklion. A visit that is taking a step back in time and some 4000 years, 2000 BC. Knossos and the Palace, famous throughout the world through the myths of Europa, the Minotaur, Daedalus and Ikarus, opens a window to the most ancient civilization of Europe. The Archaeological Museum is one of the largest and most important museums in Greece, and most important of Europe. It houses representative artifacts from all the periods of Cretan prehistory and history, covering a chronological span of over 5,500 years from the Neolithic period to Roman times. Right after walk around the city to see the Venetian buildings and castle, the impressive Cathedral, the fountains and the open street market.
Chania is the most ravishing and quaint city of Crete that ceased to be its capital after 686 years, in 1971. It was an important Minoan city and is considered to have been the “mother of all the other Cretan cities” by the ancient writers. The city is divided in two sections: Old City, where the gorgeous harbor is situated and the New City, which is located beyond its Venetian fortifications. The Old City of Chania is considered to be one of the most beautiful cities in the Mediterranean and it is called “Venice of the East”. Throughout the whole city we can witness samples of all the civilizations that have passed from here: archaeological Minoan sites, Turkish minarets and mosques, Muslim neighborhoods, Venetian fortresses and dockyards, fountains and squares, arches and mansions, the famous Loggia and of course the landmark of the city, the renowned Lighthouse. We can enjoy our lunch admiring the view of the quaint harbor or we can visit the famous Agora (Market), which was constructed in 1913 according to the standards of the market in Marseille. Since then, it has been housing a variety of traditional little shops and taverns. Here we can shop souvenirs or leather goods at very good prices. We propose a visit to the port of Chania which is one of the busiest places during the day and the most romantic spot at night. The beautiful Venetian lighthouse is ideally located at the extreme end of the pier, at the entrance of the port and is considered to be the symbol of Chania.
