GREECE THROUGH THE CENTURIES

Athens is the capital and largest city of Greece which dominates the Attica region with its recorded history spanning over 3,400 years and its earliest human presence starting somewhere between the 11th and 7th millennium BC.

Classical Athens was a powerful city-state that emerged in conjunction with the seagoing development of the port of Piraeus, which had been a distinct city prior to its 5th century BC incorporation with Athens. A center for the arts, learning and philosophy, home of Plato’s Academy and Aristotle’s Lyceum, it is widely referred to as the cradle of western civilization and the birthplace of democracy, largely because of its cultural and political impact on the European continent and the Romans. In modern times, Athens is a large cosmopolitan metropolis and central to cultural life in Greece.

Visit the famous Corinth Canal to take some stunning pictures and moving on towards Mycenae, a major center of Greek civilization from 1600BC to 1100BC to explore the archaeological site and visit the museum. Visit the beautiful seaport of Nauplia, the first capital of modern Greece with its Venetian fortress of Palamidi and the fortified islet of Bourtzi. Your next stop will be at Epidaurus to visit the ancient theatre. The UNESCO’S world heritage listed monument is reputed to be the birthplace of Apollo’s son Asklepios, the healer and was the most celebrated healing center of the classical world. Epidaurus is probably most famous for its theatre, one of the best preserved classical Greek buildings and still used today due to its amazing acoustics.

You will also see the plain of Viotia, an agricultural area, and we will also go past the city of Theva, the birthplace of King Oedipus. Drive to Delphi, known as the navel of the world in ancient times. Pass by Castalia Spring, visit the archaeological site and view the monument of the Argive Kings, the marvelous treasury of the Athenians, the Athenian Stoa, the Polygonal Wall, the monument of Platea and the Temple of Apollo, famous for its Oracle. Go on to visit the gorgeous museum, with its spectacular exhibits including the frieze of the Treasury of the Sifnians, the Naxian Sphinx, the Statue of Antinoos, the alternating triglyphs and metopes of the Athenian treasury, the famous bronze Charioteer, originally created to commemorate a victory during the 476 B.C. You will also see the Pythian Games and many other artifacts.

Experience the grand Meteora Mountains where you will visit two different Byzantine Monasteries built on top of rock towers and providing fantastic views of the area. The monasteries are perched on top of towers of sandstone, which for centuries provided totally inaccessible retreats for the monks. Meteora is considered one of the most beautiful areas of mainland Greece, and its monasteries are one of the country’s most unique attractions.

Discover the Athens Riviera with a breathtaking drive along the scenic coastal road and admire the scenic temple of Poseidon. During this relaxing ride you’ll enjoy splendid views of the Saronic Gulf, while passing through some of Athens’ most beautiful suburbs. Arrive in Cape Sounion, a historic and beautiful area of Greece. The steep cliffs offer breathtaking, panoramic views.
